Does your outer world reflect who you are today?

Lately, I’ve noticed the energy in my apartment has felt really heavy and stagnant, not aligned with how I want to feel – fully alive, light and free. And I kept feeling, this place just isn’t me anymore – like out–growing my favorite pair of shoes.

One night, it really hit me how much my environment was actually reflecting the way I was feeling inside – stuck and heavy. And with this realization, I knew I had to make some changes although it wasn’t going to be easy. Change can be scary and hard, so I knew I needed support to go through this.

Change is easier with support.

So, last weekend a dear friend came over to begin the process of transforming my space to match the energy of who I am now, and where I am going. There was laughter, crying and a good old breakdown which led to a beautiful breakthrough. I have been living in my Greenwich Village studio apartment for 12 years and over this time the small crevices have gotten filled up with stuff. I couldn’t help but wonder, what small unseen spaces within me are filled up with “things” I don’t use anymore?

With creation also comes destruction.

I woke up the next day in the middle of the chaos, things everywhere and no sense of order (which for a Virgo is not easy). My instinct was to tuck things away to make it look neat on the outside. But, I stopped myself and thought, “Lisa, how many times have you done that in your life?” Just push it back down and not deal with what was truly behind it?!

Not this time. I am embracing what change looks like and feels like… messy and uncomfortable. And the funny thing is, even though my stuff is literally everywhere, I actually feel lighter. I also feel proud and excited about creating new space in my life.

Release the idea of how change will look (and feel).

Why am I sharing this? As a coach, I support people to be the creators of their lives, and sometimes I suggest changes that may seem radical yet necessary for change. I often talk about developing a ‘relationship with change’, after all it’s inevitable. So, here I am in the trenches, walking my talk, unearthing my world around me, examining what matters, letting go of the old to make room for the new, and putting it back together in full ownership of my life. If I can do it, YOU can do it, too!
